The future of science in the age of AI

6 PM, 26 Nov 2026

In this, the inaugural event in the Fundamentals for the Future series, we explore how AI is changing what we mean by scientific progress.

Some are calling 2026 the biggest year in mathematics since Euclid. More broadly, AI is changing not only how quickly science can advance, but what we mean by scientific progress. As machines start solving problems that once required years of human effort, the frontier may shift from finding answers to deciding which questions are worth asking. Yet faster discovery is not the same as deeper understanding. So what should science optimise for in the age of AI: more answers, greater understanding or our capacity to make discoveries in the future?

To explore these and other questions, we are co-hosting the inaugural event in the Fundamentals for the Future series. The evening will begin with a conversation between Pushmeet Kohli, Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind, and John Thornhill, the Innovation Editor of the Financial Times. Afterwards, there will be a panel discussion with Tom Adeyoola, Prof. Constantin Coussios and Sherry Coutu, and then a Q&A with the audience.
